SUMMARY:Speaker Series: An Introduction to Quebec
DESCRIPTION:An Introduction to Quebec and French-speaking Canada: History\, Culture and Language\nPresented by Jim Natsis \nFree for Members | $10 for Non-Members*            REGISTER BELOW \nSaturday\, May 11th\, 4:00 – 5:00 PM \nThis lecture will serve as a one-stop shop for those interested in better understanding our friendly neighbor to the north—Canada. We will review the geography and modern history of the nation from the founding of the early permanent settlement and eventual capital of New France\, Quebec City\, in 1608\, to the present. \nWe will also discuss the role of the catholic church and the French language as cohesive points of identity in Quebec society\, and the eventual rise of the provincial government as the alternative to a mid-20th century generation seeking to partake in post WWII North American secularism and economic prosperity\, while maintaining a distinct cultural and linguistic identity. Quebec would serve as an inspiration and support for French-speaking minority communities throughout Canada as well. \nAnd finally\, we’ll look at what makes Quebec and French-speaking Canada unique culturally and linguistically not only from the rest of Canada\, but also from France and much of the francophone world. \nREGISTER  ↓ \n\n← Back Thank you for your response. ✨\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nName(required)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nEmail(required)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nSelect one:(required)\n I am an AFL member and will be attending this event. SUMMARY:Napoléon's France
DESCRIPTION:Napoléon’s France by Dr. John Greene \nProfessor of French\, University of Louisville \nSunday\, December 3rd | 4-5 pm \n  \nThis speaker series event will take place at the AFL office \nFree for AFL Members | $10 for non-members \n  \nEven before director Ridley Scott’s much anticipated Napoleon hits the big screen in November\, French commentators have objected to its characterisation of the man who styled himself Emperor of France. Over two hundred years after his death\, he continues to be a polarizing figure\, perceived differently in France than in the countries his France tried to conquer. However his character is represented\, we can perhaps agree on the places and events that shaped that character. Join us for an illustrated tour of Napoleon’s France\, taking in his birthplace of Corsica\, his coronation in Notre-Dame\, and some of his most famous military exploits\, including the Egyptian campaign. \nJohn Greene is a Professor of French at the University of Louisville\, where he teaches a wide range of courses\, including language\, literature\, culture\, film and theatre classes. He is the recipient of numerous teaching awards\, including the Dorothy S. Ludwig Excellence in Teaching Award of the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF). The French government named him a Chevalier in the Ordre des Palmes académiques for services to French education and culture.
