DESCRIPTION:An Introduction to Quebec and French-speaking Canada: History\, Culture and Language\nPresented by Jim Natsis \nFree for Members | $10 for Non-Members*            REGISTER BELOW \nSaturday\, May 11th\, 4:00 – 5:00 PM \nThis lecture will serve as a one-stop shop for those interested in better understanding our friendly neighbor to the north—Canada. We will review the geography and modern history of the nation from the founding of the early permanent settlement and eventual capital of New France\, Quebec City\, in 1608\, to the present. \nWe will also discuss the role of the catholic church and the French language as cohesive points of identity in Quebec society\, and the eventual rise of the provincial government as the alternative to a mid-20th century generation seeking to partake in post WWII North American secularism and economic prosperity\, while maintaining a distinct cultural and linguistic identity. DESCRIPTION:A Visit to Mont Saint-Michel \nPresented by Jacqueline Thomas \nAn AFL Speaker Series Event \n  \nMarch 3rd\, 2024 | 4:00 – 5:00 pm \nFree for AFL Members | $10 for non-members \n  \nJoin Jackie as she takes us on a pictorial journey to this UNESCO World Heritage site that is visited by more 3 million people each year.  She sojourned there for a week with other pilgrims and saw the Mont-Saint-Michel from the inside. The granite island is situated on the border of Normandy and Brittany in northwestern France along the English Channel.
