From Paris to Louisville: My Journey Through French Cinema
Matthieu Dalle, University of Louisville
How does one go from being a young cinephile in late 1980s Paris to starting a French film festival in Louisville twenty years later? In this talk, Matthieu Dalle, UofL French professor and director of the Louisville French Film Festival, will share his passion for cinema, which he developed watching film programs such as Le Ciné-Club and Le Cinéma de Minuit on French public television during his high school years and patronizing arthouse movie theaters as a communications and journalism student at La Sorbonne.
He will also discuss his efforts to bring French films to UofL and community-wide audiences, which resulted in the creation of the Louisville French Film Festival in 2009. He will also explain what goes on behind the scenes every year: partnerships, budget, film selection—everything you always wanted to know about the French Film Festival… but never had a chance to ask!
Matthieu Dalle is an Associate Professor of French and the Director of Undergraduate Studies in French at the University of Louisville. He is also the Director of the Louisville French Film Festival, hosted by UofL since 2009. He holds a Master’s degree in Journalism from Sorbonne Université and a Ph.D. in French Culture and Civilization from The Pennsylvania State University.
