Saturday, May 11th, 4:00 – 5:00 PM
This lecture will serve as a one-stop shop for those interested in better understanding our friendly neighbor to the north—Canada. We will review the geography and modern history of the nation from the founding of the early permanent settlement and eventual capital of New France, Quebec City, in 1608, to the present.
We will also discuss the role of the catholic church and the French language as cohesive points of identity in Quebec society, and the eventual rise of the provincial government as the alternative to a mid-20th century generation seeking to partake in post WWII North American secularism and economic prosperity, while maintaining a distinct cultural and linguistic identity. Quebec would serve as an inspiration and support for French-speaking minority communities throughout Canada as well.
And finally, we’ll look at what makes Quebec and French-speaking Canada unique culturally and linguistically not only from the rest of Canada, but also from France and much of the francophone world.
