Cyrano de Bergerac was a Parisian writer who lived to age thirty-six in seventeenth century France. He wrote what were perhaps the most daring works of the century, becoming a precursor of the Enlightenment who championed the new science and challenged all the repressive hierarchies of his day. His best known works are the witty, humorous, and futuristic Imaginary Voyages to the Moon and the Sun, which became a model for the philosophical voyages of the eighteenth century. In addition to discussing his life and times, we will also explore what it was about Cyrano that inspired one of the world’s most enduring and beloved plays.
